My first Stephen King book. Thanks to a friend who recommended this book, I am now so inspired. I wrote a lot for my major in college, even being an editor for my university’s newspaper, and quite frankly, wasn’t totally my jam. Maybe because it was “work”. But, I’ve always loved stories and always will. Stephen King is a lover of stories and you can tell in this book. I loved how he explains reading and writing, it’s just beautiful. I’m definitely now ready to jump into his books.

Roughly 1/3 of this book is useful, helpful advice. 1/3 is entertaining commentary and applicable anecdotes. 1/3 is largely memoir. Overall, very helpful and an interesting perspective!

Would I recommend the book:
Yes, to any aspiring author but also to fans of Stephen King.
My favorite part was:
How casual he is and funny. He said "readers of this may call me arrogant for saying this but..." Or things to that effect a few times and it was hilarious.
As a fan I really liked getting a first hand account of his life.
Do i think the book is well written? Why is or isn't it? Was it engaging, delightful, or inspiring? Was it staid, boring, or contrived?
It was very well written. I'm not an author but I believe any author should read this.
Was it what you expected it to be?
In some ways yes but I also didn't know how very "all in" he is when he is writing, that "reveal" was unexpected.
How I discovered the book:
Haley Pham
Format I read it in: Audiobook. Stephen King himself read it

This book was extremely informative and inspiring. It gave me the feeling I can write a novel, something I've always thought to be out of my league, and a general inspiration to go back to writing.
I'd recommend it to all aspiring writers, I didn't agree with all the points but it's a clear and concise in its directions, which leaves them open to reinterpretation.
The memoir sections were entertaining and moving, only the graphic descriptions of his injuries after the accident proved a bit too much for me.
I will very likely read it again when I feel like I need encouragement.
