The stories in this collection were intense, funny, or disturbing, but really enjoyable. An interesting glimpse of LGBTQ+ life in Puerto Rico.

For those who've been looking for an alternative to Junot Díaz, I present Luis Negrón. In this collection of short stories, Negrón explores the intersection of machismo & queerness with punctuated satire in a community in Puerto Rico. Favorite story: "The Garden."

My husband brought me several books from his work trip in Puerto Rico. I have really enjoyed the writing styles and the short story formats.

At times stereotypical and (I find) excessively graphic, this was still pretty effortless to get through. While I enjoy (the easily comparable) Junot Díaz a lot more, I appreciate Negrón’s focus on the puertorrican LGBT demographic, which tied these stories together in a more effective way than many short story collections that I’ve read before. Whilst I can’t say I loved any of them, I found both The Garden and Junito endearing and effective - even if they would have, alone, failed to capture the plurality of the collective that Negrón aims to illustrate.

aunque está escrito en una forma muy simple, me gustó mucho esta colección. fue súper interesante ver una presentación lgbt con puerto rico como su ‘backdrop.’ me encantaría leer más del autor o sobre el tema.

Because these are all short (some VERY short stories) they lack complexity and depth of characterization - but are still eminently worth reading for a glimpse into Puerto Rican gay life.
