The Juniper Tree by Barbara Comyns is a unsettling novel. At its heart is Bella Winter, a young single mother whose life has been shattered by a series of unfortunate events. Homeless, scarred by a car accident, and estranged from her indifferent family, Bella is left to navigate a bleak existence with little support. As she begins to rebuild her life, finding a job and creating a semblance of stability, the novel takes on a darker, more eerie tone, as Bella's grip on reality begins to slip.

75/2021 Leed a Barbara Comyns.

Very odd book, jarring end that is too neatly resolved.

Essential reading for those interested in fairytales and retellings. However, I was rather put off by the narrative style and voice.

I don’t know if it’s something about London novels set in the 1960’s-80’s, because I also found another one I read a few weeks ago to be dull for the same reasons despite enjoying that particular author’s work in other settings. Maybe it’s something about me and the mood I am in. I’ll try to revisit this one later.

Honestly, I don’t even remember when I started this book.
