Book synopsis: After many years of dangerous adventures trotting around the world, Lady Hardcastle and her maid Flo Armstrong have retired to the country in England for a quiet, sedate life. Instead, they are thrown into the midst of a mystery when they discover a body in the woods, a missing gem, embezzlement, sticky fingers, and too many suspects.
Book review: Offering a twist on the traditional society hierarchy, this story unfortunately fell flat. Instead of empowering and liberating the maid from her lowly servant status, we are constantly reminded of the huge gap between Flo and Lady Hardcastle as Flo is ordered around and even hired out to serve other estates.
The mystery itself was quite straightforward, so the book felt a little stretched out. The story logic felt off too, with their "secret" life before retirement being touted around at odd points. It was truly a shame that the story started after they had finished with their adventures, as this felt a little dry compared to the action they alluded to.
