Eva Tihanyi’s In the Key of Red is a work of poems focused on space. This is articulated in both the space between two lovers falling out of love, but also through the emphasis of space between the words she has penned herself. Perhaps, the clearest evidence of this is her incorporation of Anne Carson’s work.

In terms of the actual poems, I felt many held an absence that was not resolved. Although it is possible that this was a deliberate move on behalf of Tihanyi, I felt that it created a point of tension that worked against the work itself. However, the narrative progress throughout the second section, “Eros Is a Pheonix,” is artistically created and flows nicely form start to finish. I did find it interesting that penultimate poem in the book shifts its focus from the lovers and instead onto the speakers father; it creates an interesting point of entry into the subject matter of this collection.
