Fantasy: a genre of literature that features magical and supernatural elements which do not exist in the real world, thereby providing escapism from the mundane of our human condition

Subgenre: a smaller, more specific genre that is part of a larger genre

  1. Fairy Tale Retelling: fantasy based on or inspired by a fairy tale, or relies heavily on fairy tale tropes
  2. Romantasy: combines the elements of romance and fantasy, involving a focus on social, political, and romantic relationships
  3. Portal Fantasy: characters travel from the real world into a fictional fantasy world, often through a portal or gateway
  4. Urban Fantasy: features supernatural elements in the real-life grit of a modern setting, usually (but not always) a major city
  5. Cottagecore: any fantasy with cozy, country, rustic vibes, inspired by nature and/or a pastoral lifestyle - garden magic also fits
  6. Dragon Fantasy: not really a subgenre itself, exactly… but c’mon, dragons! Any dragons, your choice.
  7. Historical Fantasy: set in a historical period of the real world, often an alternative version of history with magic and/or the supernatural
  8. Gaslamp Fantasy: a subgenre of historical fantasy typically set in England during the Regency, Victorian or Edwardian eras
  9. Magical Realism: blends fantasy and reality in a way that appears ordinary and seamless in the story (realistic fiction meets fantasy elements) OR conversely, a story in which the magic/supernatural are the fantasies, imaginings, or delusions of the characters (like a blend of literary fiction and fantasy)
  10. Dark Academia: themes of academia or intellectualism with a mysterious atmosphere - think dark libraries, campus societies, or elite schools with a gothic aesthetic
  11. Time-Travel: character(s) move between different points in time, either forward or backward
  12. Viking/Norse Fantasy: fantasy inspired by or based on Scandinavian and Germanic tales, or influenced by Norse mythology
