This book was polarizing. I felt like it tried to have class consciousness but kind of lacked it, so when it tried it tried really hard. But, ultimately, it wasn't really critical or self aware enough for me to like it. Also, as someone who knows the neighborhood this book is set in, I was disappointed (but not surprised) to see no acknowledgement of the other communities who DO live in that neighborhood, even if it's overwhelmingly for rich white people. The writing is good enough but the author is the VP of a major publishing company, so, like, it better be? She has the time, money, and resources. Plus, she got every author to blurb it. I don't know. It's a novel that lacks in surprises and risks. The characters have potential, but I don't think the novel pushes anyone or asks any big questions. In a year, I probably won't remember what happened in this book at all.
