 Re-read

Honestly, my first read of this book was 3 years ago and I already forgot the story so this re-read feels like I read the book for the first time again, lol. Just like my first read, this book is entertaining and didn't take itself (too) seriously. Sure the mix and match of modern and RPG setting might be weird. I mean, while Drunk Demon feels like your "Dungeon & Dragon" fantasy with steamy factor, its also feels like fantasy that located in modern Orleans bayou with some of its delicacies!

As for my first complaint about Usha, for this Orbit version, Usha's reason in siding with the monster side after knowing the goddess's treachery was pretty well written. Or maybe I just forgot read about it in the first read. I don't have time to compare when Drunk Demon published as self-publish with traditionally published version. But, I think the typos already corrected. The narration and story's flow also improved as well. The steamy scenes also still there with all that detail, lol. I think it will get censored or maybe tamely written but nope, still hawt! Alas, I like the self publish cover more rather than the Orbit version, but that's more like personal preference.

If you like a romance fantasy with humor and light world building that cross some of your favorite trope like a reluctant heroine going to adventure, a rakish hero with "touch her and you die" attitude to match, That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon is worth to try!

It's funny, goofy and make me entertained to the end. This novel remind me so much of G.A.Aiken's Dragon Kin, and why why...the novel also featured dragon with interracial romance. Much like G.A.Aiken/Shelly Laurenston! I got the inspiration though, and Lemming sure pretty much deliver for her debut.

The title pretty much remind me of those Light Novels and Manhwa titles that become popular nowadays. The story concept and premise also make fun of many fantasy tropes, such as a party of chosen heroes that will fight demon king/lord/whatsoever and will bring prosperity also peace to their town. Except...in this novel, the demon is not what they seems to be, the goddess kinda of sus, and the heroes...well the heroes is not the protagonist at all. Our heroine, Cinnamon, or Cin is pretty much like a gender-bend version of Bilbo Baggins, with adventure-phobia and prefer live in a mundane way. But her lack of desire to adventure have a very good reason behind it. In the end she come to love adventure and make friends in her journey. Our hero, or villain, or anti-hero, whichever you prefer, Fallon is not what I think at first. I think he will be an alpha-hole jerk, but surprising, he's very nice and can be considerate. He also listen to Cin when it's come to killing people, although he still kill them if he think they will threat our heroine. He like to tease Cin, and even he can be too overprotective to Cin, he also try to threat her with respect.

The first PoV writing style is good and I do like Cin's personality. There some issues of the writing quality. Some typos and also how the element of fantasy trope here kind of mismatched. Like, the setting supposed to be a medieval or like those RPG-games, but the language is pretty modern! So, I recommend to not think things too hard, although it can be frustrating if you prefer your fantasy really have a traditional aspect. The world building is kinda simple, so it help if you don't like your fantasy romance not too complicated. Although, I hope it can be written more..idk..more developed, perhaps? Some things also didn't make sense, such as how Usha, the tavern owner whom happen to befriend Cin, is so easily agree to the way demon enslaved in her city? Like, all her entire life she see them as demons, and now she suddenly become demon right activist? Kinda sudden, though.

Since this is fantasy romance FOR ADULT, ofc I will review about the sex scenes, har har. Didn't expect it to be..sooo steamy. Lemming sure know how to write good sexual tension and scorching, steamy, make-me-hot-and-bothered sex scenes. Wew, it's been a long time for me to read any good sex scenes in novel I read these last months, and Lemming sure deliver. It will help to read content warning of this novel from her web, but if you don't have time, the sex scenes contain light BDSM (although, I just see it as Fallon love to dominate Cin, and I don't see anything wrong with that. But, maybe your mileages may vary), very graphic sex scenes (heh, I'm not COMPLAINING) and dub-con. As for dub-con content, again, yours preference may different than mine, but I don't see it as dub-con, and.. I do read many dub-con contents from mangas I read, so yeah, again, your mileages may vary.

Another favorite is the cover, I really like the cartoonish feeling and the color, also the drawing style is very good. The title like I said, very tongue-in-cheek, especially if you follow or read many Japanese Light Novels and Korean Manhwa with the same trope/premises. For a debut, sure this book have it's weakness and IMHO can be written more smoothly especially in world building, language usage, but in the end I feel entertained. I can't wait to read more novel from Kimberly Lemming.
