Jeremy Bridges is cat nip. Handsome, smart, aloof and RICH, RICH, RICH. As the owner of a software company, he could be the target of people trying to take advantage of him or physically hurt him. Bernadette is his body guard; ex-military, smart, sharp & quick with the sarcasm. She’s worked for him for years (and been both attracted and repelled by him) and has been privy to his rather unappealing accumulation of women.
One night, after a black-tie affair ends again with Jeremy taking home a woman (who Bernie is suspicious of), Bernie’s sense of duty won’t allow her to simply leave him to his games. Something’s not right. She’s proven correct when she stumbles upon Jeremy being held at gunpoint by the woman he brought home, and she has help on the way. Jeremy and Bernie frantically make way to his “panic” room and are stuck there until the police arrive.
In such a tension filled encounter, Bernadette quits rather suddenly because she can no longer take Jeremy’s unwillingness to listen to her even though she is good at her job and is proven to be right. One thing leads to another and they have angry, passionate sex in the panic room. And she walks away…
Only to return a couple of months later, pregnant and wanting his signature on documents releasing him from responsibility. Jeremy balks at this. This would be the perfect opportunity for Bernie to take advantage of him and wring him for every cent he’s worth. But she surprises him. Based on his childhood, she doesn’t think he will make a good father, and Bernie wants her child to have the kind of loving father she had and she’ll settle for nothing less. But it’s Jeremy’s turn with the surprise. He won’t give up his child. He thinks he can do better than his father did.
So the two of them embark on this journey, trying to learn to trust each other. This story is almost like a fairy tale. It’s actually quite funny and pretty sexy, but the handsome prince falls in love with the plain commoner. I really liked both characters, Jeremy was funny, Bernie was tough and they were both vulnerable. It was not a stretch for them to end up together.
