Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
3.0
Desperate for some light reading, I was relieved to find this book in my apartment. I can imagine having bought this at some point in 2018 at an airport bookstore whenever the paperback was reprinted to promote the movie.
This is a genre I read sparingly, and I found Crazy Rich Asians to be really fun and not really deserving of some of the nitpicks I've seen in other reviews. I was actually quite interested in the ethnographic elements because I do have a friend who would be considered a "crazy rich Asian" who blew my mind on a trip to Hong Kong back in college.
The writing is pretty strong but falls short of classic or cultural eminency. When every character (and her mother) has unlimited money, it's challenging to bring each story arch or subplot to a satisfying conclusion. Through 3/4 of the book, I was happy with it. Toward the end, I was starting to get overwhelmed by the author trying to fit every imaginary scenario and subplot into the book. At the end, I was just like, alright, time for bed.
