The Secret Project by Jonah Winter
4.0
A more comprehensive narrative of the creation of the atomic bomb & its subsequent testing in New Mexico.
Jeannette Winter's style is a good match for the desert landscapes and the story's increasing shadowy-ness. The final three full page spreads are visually remarkable, though they leave the reader feeling like the story is incomplete--which is why the author's note is important context that immediately follows the impressive concluding illustrations.
A choice quote from the author's note: "[A]s of 2016, there are 15,700 nuclear weapons still in existence throughout the world. / Hopefully, some day that number will be zero."
Back matter also includes a list for further reading, and a dedication to "the peacemakers."
