Kingfisher is slowly becoming one of my favorite authors. She writes darkness and horror in a way that is somehow cozy, with loveable characters, unique creatures, and concepts that are just magical enough not to be real, but also real enough to question whether or not they are. The narrative style she uses is also funny, relatable, and she tends to make underdogs and oddities central characters, coaxing out their strengths and building their confidence. This one was short but like sipping a cup of tea that stays the perfect temperature the entire time.
