I wasn't sure if this book was going to be my cup of tea, but boy was I wrong I absolutely devoured this audiobook and fell in love with the charachters. It is moving and emotional. I was rooting for Coventina and found myself tearing up multiple times as she made a way for herself in the world against all odds. The chapters were short making it easy to binge in a sitting and all the different point of views really created a captivating story. I found myself wanting to know everything about the charachters especially what happened to Matilda and when we got that my heart broke. I think the use of the black cake was extremely well done to not only show family traditions but how food can transport us back to where we or out ancestors are from. I think everyone has a dish that does this for them.
