“Mary: An Awakening of Terror” by Nat Cassidy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25

Tw: mental health, bullying, misogamy (lots and lots of misogyny), child abuse, non physical self harm, bugs (specifically ants).

“Mary” follows the titular character, a woman experiencing menopause who may or may not be schizophrenic or have a dissociative identity disorder. When she’s fired from her NYC job, she moves back home to the desert where she begins to the feel the echos of the serial killer that ran rampant through the town before she was born.

Thanks it. That’s all of a synopsis you’re getting from me because WOW what a story. This story could have gone anywhere but that third act twist was unexpected and I really enjoyed it. This novel will satisfy both horror fans and true crime junkies.

The highest of praises has to be given to Cassidy of his portrayal of a middle aged peri-menopausal woman. Cassidy wanted to pay homage to his mother and to Stephen King’s “Carrie” and went to great lengths to do the story justice and I for one place him next to Brom as the second man who has been able to capture feminine rage so brilliantly on the page.

I really don’t have much in the way of criticism for this book. I’m a little iffy on the ending, but it’s not so much of a detractor from my overall enjoyment of the novel. I think this book would pair really well with “Slewfoot” and “Bright Young Women” and potentially some true crime books that I have yet to read (I would love to tell you which ones but I think they would be massive spoilers cause you’ll never guess what’s coming).

The majority of this book was incredibly interesting and entertaining, it's very clear that the author has a deep love of horror and a great understanding of what tropes work well together to create an interesting story. That being said, whatever aspects of this book are dissecting the existence of women and feminism felt kind of clumsy to me. It felt like the author was dropping certain phrases or buzzwords in the book to appeal to people who like reading feminist horror without it actually being relevant or woven into the story well. I think if you were to look at it from a perspective of it's an entertaining horror book, it does its job wonderfully and that is what I'm basing my rating off of. However if you were to look at the book from a perspective of examining a woman's story and how society treats women at large, then I'd say you would be better off looking at something else, perhaps something written by a woman.

This book took me a while to get through. The first 60% or so felt a bit long and slow. But once things got going it was seemed impossible to put down.

Simply wasn’t the book for me- very long read that felt unnecessarily lengthy.
