Mostly read this for Viy tbh because the 1967 Russian adaptation is one of my favorite horror movies and for my bungou stray dogs challenge lol

I loved most of these. Just a pleasure to read. And inspires me to write?!

This is the second time I’ve been burned by Pevear and Volokhonsky. Their translations feel aimed at temperamental Russians, not English speaking Rusophiles. Gogol’s story intros are always wonky but P&V make them indecipherable. Go for the Fusso.

Excellent collection of Gogol. Sadly there was no forward by the beekeeper, which to me was my favorite writing of Gogol-as good as or maybe better than The Overcoat's Akaky Akakievich.
