I couldn't have cared less for this thing for the first 70% of it. Only kept reading to get to the monsters wrecking havoc part, which happens way too late in the game, but when it does get to that part, it does deliver a thrilling and cinematic climax. Really picks up big time in the tail end which brings it up to a 2/5. No offence, Scott Sigler, but this would be cool as a movie or series if the first half or more was rewritten completely

Very good book, but Scott Sigler is a great author. The key thing expressed from this book is that as humans we sometimes think we are on the same level as God and we can do what he does. When we reap the results of our God like behavior can reek havoc on many others. Science should contain limits, but there is someone out there always who wants to prove that through science we can and should create life.

I loved this book! I have always had a thing for science fiction, but it's been a while since I truly indulged in this genre. Clearly, this is not high-end literature, but let's not be snotty, this is a jolly good romp. The book gets a point deduction because sensitive readers might get the wrong idea about science and research, no matter how clearly it is stated that this is a run-away, non-condoned mission which is also being chased by US military to be forcefully shut down.
The idea is to genetically engineer an "ancestor" mammalian creature with organs that can be used for transplant. This goal has been attempted and failed many times by the team in the book. They have genius scientist Jian with major psychiatric problems. Her boss Ruhmkorrf reduced her medicine to get progress, but what he gets is something else entirely. The surrogate mothers, cows, do not bear benign herbivores for organ harvest. Their wombs are ripped open by creatures with an ancient genetic code, engineered to be smart and aditionally ravenously hungry. In the mix are several characters - Sara and Colding for one, who indulge in an affair - including a dog that are deeply sympathetic and that you really care about. As the engineering is taking place on an isolated island, it's a race against time to get off it because the last human beings have been hunted down and killed.
This is highly recommended for fans of horror movies and science fiction. There's a long, deliciously slow build-up of tension before all hell breaks lose. A wonderful book! I'll be reading more of this author for sure.

I think the reason why I didn’t like this story as much as I could have is mainly due to my own personal preferences. I usually prefer to feel a deeper connection to the characters in a story and this novel did not provide that for me, even though the characters were likable, even the scummy ones a little bit. I feel like the advertising for this novel is misleading, it’s not a horror, it’s a thriller/suspense novel. Which is fine if that’s what you’re looking for. I found myself on the edge of my seat a lot during this story so you may enjoy if you like thrillers. I especially think you’ll like it if you liked Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.
