I enjoyed this book, but honestly felt like there was too much jammed into the book.

While the premise was strong, I found the story rather predictable and too much of the plot happening conveniently, rather than naturally. Like how the Queenstrial was never mentioned until it was happening THE EXACT DAY Mare is brought to work at the palace. Huge, once a generation event to find the next queen of the land that was never mentioned until the plot needed it.

This book sticks out in the genre of dystopian books with not just plot and immersive world, but how engaging every word is, how fully dynamic each character is and how many plot twists surprise you in a chapter.

“Anyone can betray anyone.”
I started reading this a while ago back when I was reading only romance. Long story short, I quickly dnfed it because I thought it was really boring. Since then, I’ve been bombarded with many spoilers, and yes, I even knew what the big betrayal in this book was. I still wanted to read it again though and see if I’ll still really enjoy it.
The world-building in this book is amazing! A world where two groups are divided, the reds and silvers, where the silvers treat the reds as inferior. I thought this book was low-key dark, especially in some scenes. Mare Barrow is a red who after a series of events ends up in the palace of the silver royalty. She discovers something about herself that gives her the opportunity to try to create change for her people. She takes risks and at times, she got me scared for her. She was determined, even if that meant sometimes using people. Wasn’t a fan of all her decisions, but she was in a tough position. How does she use what she knows about herself and her new, weird position to help her people?
She has different relationships in this book: her family, her best friend, and Cal and Maven, the princes. I personally didn’t feel much chemistry between her and either of the princes, but apparently, there is supposed to be something like that happening in this book. There were also characters that we definitely hated, great for balance. How do all these characters play a role in Mare’s decisions throughout the book?
The silvers have different abilities, which I found pretty cool. They were pretty diverse in what they could do. I found myself awing when what a silver could do was described. A big part of me will always fangirl over characters with powers. We do meet a lot of silvers who are not evil. I really liked that Aveyard did this. It’s this idea that there are always good people where you wouldn’t think there would be.
Trust/betrayal seemed to be THE theme in the book. I mean, it was really clear. I love how it was illustrated in the book, really showing you how people can be literally super talented actors when they have conniving plans. Overall, I think this was a pretty great book. It’s just one of those stories that really grabs your interest and keeps you hooked. There were many components to it, so I really think there’s something in this book for everyone. Maybe not romance, but definitely something.
