TLDR: Dystopian Fantasy. Expected Accompanying Love Triangle. Heavy handed use of extended similes that forgot the ‘b’ in subtle. If you’ve read other dystopian novels, fairly predictable.

Review: It’s dystopian fantasy. Very Hunger Games and Red Rising. The ‘Silvers’ have powers and rule, the ‘Reds’ are working class. LOTS of long-winded similes that force the concepts and the points and comparisons the author is trying to make at you instead of letting you draw the conclusion yourself. Oh! Could the Reds with their bent backs while the Silvers stand tall be referring to ~something~???

Also- love triangle-esq, but with brothers. Which adds a whole other layer to my general not-a-fan of love triangles thing.

Overall- not absolutely horrible. Probably a good rec for an entry level dystopian fan who doesn’t have the basic plot in mind already from a past-read dystopian work.

Took an unexpected turn and kept turning. Amazing fight scenes and who knows if I'll like the rest of the series but this one was bloody and good.

Fairly standard YA dystopic trilogy material but I'll still probably read the other ones.

I started this book and I can’t lie it captivated me. I was so interested with the whole idea of the Reds and the Silvers, and Mare Barrow’s personality. However as the story progressed I felt like some of the things Mare said or did didn’t make sense. Like her disgust for the Silvers in the beginning and her strong red pride felt irrelevant at some points within the story. Also her and Cal’s relationship really made no sense to me. They barely spent time together and hadn’t known each other for long at all, so where exactly did love come from??

Apart from that I did enjoy the book for the most part but found that there were many parts that just didn’t really make sense to me as the reader.

I can't believe it took me so long to read this but I really did enjoy it. I had a feeling I would, but my mood also happened to be at the perfect place to enjoy this book to the fullest (I had just finished rewatching the hunger games films and was looking for that dystopian feel). This book absolutely did not disappoint!

I think the story premise is really interesting, and the themes of power, classism, revolution, lies, and betrayal all hit really hard.

Now for some spoilery thoughts, because I have to talk about them:

I absolutely did not see Maven's betrayal coming. Although, in hindsight, I do see how it was definitely hinted to us. I just wanted to believe that our boy was with us, but I guess I was tricked right along with Mare. Although it is upsetting, I'm grateful that it paves a way for Mare to end up with Cal (which I assume is endgame, although tbd).

As for Mare's brother...
I was really hoping that we would find some sort of plot twist, he's actually still alive action because it is fairly common in books and for once I was really glad to see it. Admittedly, that sort of surprise had begun to feel cheap to me because it happens so often in books, but this time I wad happy to see it because I was really curious about Mare's brother and what his powers are - if they're the same of different from Mare's. And if anyone else in her family has the same gifts. I guess we'll see when I read the next book.
